Minimum Capital to Start Algorithmic Trading

Every number on this page comes from official broker pages and regulatory documents verified in June 2026. All margins and fees are subject to change — verify with your broker before trading. Start has a path picker if you’re still choosing which market to enter.

PDT rule change: effective June 4, 2026. FINRA Rule 4210 amendments eliminated the Pattern Day Trader $25,000 equity floor and the 4-trade-in-5-days count test (FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-10; SEC Release 34-105226). The replacement is an intraday margin standard: your broker must ensure your account covers its largest intraday margin requirement across open positions — approximately 25% of position value, not full notional. However, the rule allows individual brokers to continue applying the old $25,000 policy through October 20, 2027. Check your broker’s current margin policy. The separate Reg T $2,000 minimum to open a margin account was not changed.

PDT Rule Change: The Detail

The Pattern Day Trader rule required a $25,000 minimum equity balance to execute four or more day trades in a rolling five-business-day window. The rule was eliminated at the regulatory level effective June 4, 2026. Primary sources:

What replaced it: an intraday margin standard. Firms must ensure every margin account holds sufficient equity to cover the account’s largest intraday margin requirement — the peak maintenance-margin shortfall across all open positions during the session. This is approximately 25% of position value (standard maintenance margin rate), not 100% of notional. Compliance: real-time blocking when a new order would create a shortfall, or end-of-day computation and margin call.

What does not change: the Reg T $2,000 minimum equity to open and maintain a margin account. Day-trading equities on margin still requires at least $2,000 even with no PDT floor.

Phase-in warning: brokers may continue enforcing the old $25,000 policy through October 20, 2027. During this window your broker may still apply the $25,000 floor. FINRA’s investor page confirms the change but explicitly notes the phase-in. Verify your broker’s current policy before trading.

Micro Futures: Intraday vs Overnight Margin

Two separate numbers are often confused:

Broker account minimums: NinjaTrader requires any amount >$0 (the $400 figure cited in third-party reviews is not a NinjaTrader-set number — do not use it); Tradovate states no minimum on its official funding page; AMP Futures requires $100; Optimus Futures requires $500 for micros. tastytrade reports $0 for CME futures in a non-IRA margin account with The Works margin level (MEDIUM confidence — verify directly). IBKR requires $2,000 Commodities Net Liquidation Value to open a futures position (MEDIUM confidence).

Options Approval and Equity Floors

Long calls and puts (buying only) work in a cash account at $0 minimum — cost is option premium × 100 plus $0.65 per contract at Schwab and Fidelity (as of 2026-06-06). Level 1 (Schwab) or Tier 1 (Fidelity) approval is required; both are available in cash accounts. ORF and OCC exchange fees apply on top of $0.65; they are small and variable.

Spreads and naked options require a margin account ($2,000 Reg T minimum) plus higher tier approval. Fidelity publishes explicit equity floors: $10,000 for spreads, $20,000 for naked equity options, $50,000 for naked index options (as of 2026-06-06). Schwab does not publish a stated dollar floor; qualification is experience and financial situation based.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the $25,000 pattern day trader rule gone?
Yes, at the regulatory level. FINRA Rule 4210 amendments took effect June 4, 2026 (FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-10), eliminating the 'pattern day trader' designation, the 4-trade-in-5-days count test, and the $25,000 equity floor entirely. The replacement is an intraday margin standard: accounts must maintain equity sufficient to cover the largest intraday margin requirement across open positions. However, the rule includes an 18-month phase-in through October 20, 2027, during which individual brokers may still enforce the old $25,000 policy. Verify your broker's current policy. The separate Reg T $2,000 minimum to open a margin account was not changed.
What is the cheapest way to start with real money?
Equities swing trading in a cash account has the lowest documented hard floor: $0 account minimum at Alpaca, IBKR, Schwab, and Fidelity (as of 2026-06-05/06), with $0 commissions on US equities. You need enough to buy at least one share, or a fractional position where supported. Crypto spot at Kraken also starts at $0. Both paths avoid the $2,000 Reg T margin minimum, PDT concerns, and futures broker minimums.
What does intraday margin mean for day traders now?
After the June 4, 2026 rule change, firms must ensure every margin account maintains equity sufficient to cover its largest intraday margin requirement -- approximately 25% of position value (the standard maintenance margin rate), not the full notional value. Firms may comply by blocking trades in real time when a shortfall would occur, or by computing an end-of-day intraday-margin-deficit and issuing a margin call. The actual capital required depends on how many positions you hold simultaneously and their notional value, not a flat $25,000 floor.
How much does data cost for algorithmic trading?
Paper trading and end-of-day equity data: $0 -- yfinance provides free historical OHLCV, and Alpaca's Basic tier includes real-time IEX data at no cost. Delayed SIP equities (15-min): $29/mo (Massive Stocks Starter, as of 2026-06-05). Full real-time SIP equities: $99/mo (Alpaca Algo Trader Plus, as of 2026-06-05). Futures CME Level 1 data: $12/mo for the full bundle (CME+CBOT+NYMEX+COMEX) or $4/mo for a single exchange (NinjaTrader pricing, 2026-06-06).
