Where to Start Algorithmic Trading

The right starting point depends on how much capital you have and what you want to learn. Below are seven paths — from $0 paper trading to US retail forex — each with its verified minimum, a short reality check, the stack you need, and links to the deeper comparisons.

Default recommendation: start on paper. A $0 paper account lets you run real code against real market prices with zero capital at risk. Every other path on this page becomes much clearer after you have shipped one working backtest. See the first walkthrough to get there in under an hour.

Paper Trading — Alpaca

Minimum: $0 · as of 2026-06-05

The entire stack is free. Alpaca paper trading has no minimum deposit, no time limit, and pre-funds a simulated account with $100,000. The yfinance → vectorbt → alpaca-py chain costs $0 to install. Your first goal is getting a real backtest to run and reading its stats honestly, not making money. Paper trading surfaces the real friction early: data hygiene, order routing, and the gap between a backtest and a live system.

Crypto Spot

Minimum: Kraken $0 · Coinbase Advanced ~$1/order · as of 2026-06-05

Kraken has a $0 account minimum; Coinbase Advanced requires roughly $1 per order notional per asset. Crypto markets trade 24/7 with no pattern day trader rules, making them accessible for testing live strategies at small scale. Spot means you own the asset outright — no margin, no liquidation risk beyond your deposit. Commissions are taker-fee based rather than per-share. AlgoDrill is unaffiliated with Kraken or Coinbase.

Minimum: $0 to open · price of 1 share to trade · as of 2026-06-05

Alpaca, IBKR, Schwab, and Fidelity all have $0 account minimums and $0 commissions on US-listed equities. The practical floor is the cost of one share (fractional positions available at some brokers). Daily OHLCV via yfinance is free; full real-time SIP is $99/mo (Alpaca Algo Trader Plus, as of 2026-06-05). AlgoDrill is unaffiliated with any broker.

Equities Day Trading — Margin

Minimum: $2,000 Reg T margin · PDT $25k floor eliminated eff. 2026-06-04 (check broker) · as of 2026-06-06

Day-trading US equities on margin requires a $2,000 Reg T minimum to open a margin account — this was not changed by the 2026 rule update. The FINRA Pattern Day Trader $25,000 equity floor was eliminated when FINRA Rule 4210 amendments took effect June 4, 2026 (FINRA RN 26-10). However, brokers may continue applying the old $25,000 policy through October 20, 2027 — check your broker’s current policy before assuming the floor is gone. The replacement is an intraday margin standard: your account must cover the largest intraday margin requirement across open positions.

Micro Futures (MES / MNQ)

Minimum: $50 intraday/MES (NinjaTrader, Plus500) · $2,649 CME overnight/MES · as of 2026-06-06

Micro E-mini futures trade at 1/10th the notional of standard E-minis. The $50 intraday margin at NinjaTrader and Plus500 US covers one MES position held intraday; that margin resets at the close, replaced by the CME overnight maintenance margin of $2,649/MES ($3,997/MNQ) as of 2026-06-06 — reprices with market volatility. CME Level 1 data costs $12/mo for the full CME bundle (NinjaTrader pricing, 2026-06-06). AlgoDrill is unaffiliated with NinjaTrader, Plus500, or any futures broker.

Choosing Your First Path

Two questions narrow the field quickly:

  1. Have you tested your code? If not, start on paper — capital is irrelevant until your system works. Run the first walkthrough first.
  2. How much real capital are you willing to risk right now? Under $100: crypto spot or equities cash. Under $500: add micro futures, intraday only. Under $2,000: swing equities or options buying. Over $2,000: all paths including intraday equities margin.

The capital table at /minimum-capital-to-start-trading shows every verified account minimum, margin floor, data cost, and commission with as-of dates for all eight paths.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest way to start algorithmic trading?
Paper trading with Alpaca is free: $0 minimum deposit, no time limit, and $100,000 simulated cash. The full stack -- yfinance, vectorbt, and alpaca-py -- installs with pip and costs $0. Start by running the first walkthrough, which produces a real backtest with real performance numbers. Only deposit real capital once you have a tested, honest system.
Do I still need $25,000 to day trade in 2026?
No -- at the regulatory level. The FINRA Pattern Day Trader rule's $25,000 equity floor was eliminated when FINRA Rule 4210 amendments took effect June 4, 2026 (FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-10). However, the rule includes a phase-in period through October 20, 2027 during which individual brokers may continue applying the old $25,000 policy. Check your broker's current margin policy before assuming the $25,000 floor is gone. The separate Reg T $2,000 minimum to open or maintain a margin account was not changed.
Can I trade micro futures with $50?
The $50 is the intraday day-trading margin per MES contract at NinjaTrader and Plus500 US (as of 2026-06-06) -- the capital required to hold a position within the same session. Overnight, the CME maintenance margin for MES is $2,649 per contract (as of 2026-06-06, reprices with market volatility) -- any position held past market close requires that amount. Account minimums vary: NinjaTrader requires more than $0 (any positive amount), Tradovate states no minimum on its funding page, AMP Futures requires $100, and Optimus Futures requires $500 for micros.
What is the difference between a cash account and a margin account for algo trading?
A cash account settles trades in 1-2 business days and limits positions to settled cash balance -- no leverage, no PDT rules, no $2,000 Reg T minimum. A margin account lets you borrow against equity (Reg T: 50% initial, 25% maintenance) and supports short selling and intraday day trading, but requires a $2,000 minimum equity deposit. After the June 4, 2026 PDT rule change, margin accounts must also maintain equity sufficient to cover the largest intraday margin requirement across all open positions. For swing equity algos, a cash account is usually simpler. For intraday strategies or strategies that require shorting, a margin account is required.
